Our second SymphonyPlus streaming offering begins with Edvard Grieg’s lush Holberg suite featuring traditional Nordic dance forms as an homage to humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor died to young from illness but not before leaving a catalogue of charming compositions including this gem Novellette Number 1 for strings, tambourine and triangle. African-American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, named by his arts loving mother after our preceding composer wrote “Grass” as a reflection and remembrance on the call to war by American Poet Carl Sandburg. Copland’s Clarinet Concerto performed by ASO Principal Clarinettist Robert diLutis was commissioned by the legendary big band leader and jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman is a spectacular jazz inspired concerto from one of Americas great composers.
